Master of Science in Electro-Optics

Advising

In case of a research assistant, the faculty research supervisor shall serve as the academic advisor. For other students, the EO Program Director or his designate will serve as the temporary advisor until the student has identified his/her advisor from among the EO faculty members.

Plan of Study

The individual Plan of Study will include the specific courses and all other requirements of the M.S. EO degree the student is expected to complete. The Plan of Study must be filed with the Office of Graduate Engineering Programs & Research prior to registration for the tenth graduate credit hour or before registration for the third semester. The Plan of Study and any amendments thereto must be approved by the advisor, the Program Director, and the Associate Dean of Graduate Engineering Programs and Research.

The M.S. program of study must include a minimum of 30 semester hours consisting of the following:

1. Twenty-one semester hours of Electro-Optics core courses: EOP 501, EOP 502, EOP 505, EOP 506, EOP 513, EOP 514, EOP 541L, EOP 542L, EOP 543L.

2. Three semester hours of a technical elective.

3. Six semester hours of thesis in the case of a thesis option or six semester hours of approved technical electives in the case of a no-thesis option. Up to six semester hours, or the equivalent, of approved courses may be transferred from other accredited institutions to the University of Dayton.

Final Examination

A final examination is required of all students at the completion of the MS program. Students completing a thesis must be examined by a thesis committee consisting of three members of which at least two are EO faculty members at least one of whom is on the graduate faculty. The faculty research supervisor of a student supported by a research assistantship is a member and typically the chair of this committee. This examination requires an oral presentation to the thesis committee for the purpose of thesis defense. This presentation will be given only after the final draft of the written thesis has been adequately reviewed by all thesis committee members, and the thesis advisor has approved the draft. A student who fails to successfully defend his/her thesis cannot be given another examination in the same semester. No student shall be allowed to take this examination more than twice.

Students who have received waiver of the thesis requirement will be examined by a three-member EO advisory committee. This examination will be centered around an oral presentation on a topic mutually agreed to by the student and the advisory committee. This topic must be selected and approved before the start of the intended graduation semester. At the discretion of the advisory committee, a written report may also be required. The examination may be repeated once, but not in the same academic term.
